Zimfest ’08 – Party for a Cause

Hordes of music lovers, musicians and revelers will be heading for the Tafelberg Tavern in Gardens, Cape Town, for Zimfest ’08 on 6 September. The festival is based on a simple concept – plenty of excellent music by South African bands will entertain party-goers and the proceeds will go toward humanitarian efforts on behalf on the people of Zimbabwe, many of whom are living within South Africa’s borders.

Sounds of the Global Breakthrough Festival

Lifestyle SA Festival – Celebrating Black

“Afropolitan” is the word that has been coined to describe South African black people who are deeply rooted in their culture, which they consider to be at the forefront of their identity, but at the same time acknowledging that they exist in a cosmopolitan environment influenced by westernized preferences and consumption habits. The “Lifestyle SA Festival – Celebrating Black” to be held in at the Cape Town International Convention Center in Cape Town, South Africa, from 7-9 December 2007 will fully embrace the Afropolitan identity.

Elton John Touring South Africa in 2008

Elton John has the reputation for being a great humanitarian and is one of the most successful musicians of his generation with a career spanning some forty years, during which time he has been the winner of five Grammy Awards and one Academy Award. South African fans are thrilled that Elton John will be performing in South Africa in January 2008. His first performance in South Africa will be in Cape Town on 13 January, followed by a concert in Durban on 16 January and two concerts in Johannesburg on 18 and 19 January 2008.

Awesome Praise South Africa

The Soweto String Quartet

Music began emerging of a different kind during the 80’s in South Africa, an eclectic sound that was fresh and exciting absorbing the native African rhythms and movements from the townships with that of the traditional eighteenth century European instruments. Traditionally a ‘string quartet’ is made up of a group of four musicians as well as four string instruments – this ‘normally’ includes two violins, a cello and a viola.

We are not referring to musicians who are obviously South African – such as Mango Groove, the Soweto String Quartet and Johnny Clegg who have all created their own small niche in global markets – we are talking about bands who have hit the international music scene in such a big way that they’ve climbed the charts, turned heads and even dominated the music scene for a while.
