Fetching weather...
Randburg was originally established as a residential suburb in 1959 and got its name by combining parts of “Rand” (from the Witwatersrand) and “Johannesburg.” Despite being part of the greater Johannesburg area today, Randburg once had its own independent municipal government. It became well-known for housing many of South Africa’s earliest television studios — the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) operated several of its TV facilities there in the early days of South African television.

Randburg

Consisting of thirty-two suburbs, the town of Randburg lies on the northwestern boundary of Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Taking its name from the South African currency which in 1959 replaced the pound sterling, Randburg was awarded town status in July of that same year.

Randburg is primarily a residential area set out as a garden city with tree-lined streets and many parks. The businesses and industries that fall within Randburg’s boundaries are limited to light industrial and office parks. A huge attraction in Randburg is The Brightwater Commons (previously Randburg Waterfront) shopping center set in a large grassy commons area around a water feature which boasts colorful musical fountains in the evening. This leisure and entertainment center includes more than sixty stores, restaurants, cafés and eateries, as well as a skatepark, health club and cinemas, attracting visitors from neighboring Gauteng cities and suburbs. Also of interest in Randburg are the Klein Jukskei Vintage Car Museum and the municipal art collection.
