Glendower Golf Club is a exquisitely designed golf course in Johannesburg, South Africa. Glendower Golf Club was founded in March 1937. A brilliant course it hosted the renowned Transvaal Open Championship only 2 years after opening. The prestigious event was won by A.D. “Bobby” Locke who set a world record score with 265 shooting rounds broken up as 66, 69, 66 and 64. Glendower Golf Club once again set a record in 1946 when professional golfers from South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia) gathered for a tournament where the purse was 100 pounds, the biggest to date in South Africa. In the year 1973 Glendower was declared a Nature Reserve in order to preserve the natural vegetation and abundant bird-life. In the 1980’s Glendower’s golf course was given a face-lift. All of the greens were redesigned, water hazards were adjusted and extra tee positions were created. Today, Glendower is considered one of the most challenging courses in the country and is presently rated number one in Gauteng. In the past, on three occasions, Glendower has also hosted the South African Open. With such a history of experience and extensive foresight, Glendower is certain to remain a golfer’s dream for years to come.
