Clifton Beach

A Trend-Setters Paradise

Clifton is considered by many holidaymakers to be the jewel of Cape Town’s coastline. Separated by massive granite boulders, Clifton’s white sandy beaches – First, Second, Third and Fourth Beach – each offer a unique fun-in-the-sun experience. Clifton’s beaches have been rated as one of Discovery Travel Channel’s Top Ten Beaches for both 2003 and 2004, as well as being designated as a Blue Flag Beach – an internationally recognized award for beaches meeting stringent safety, facility and environmental standards.

With steps leading down to the beaches from the road, Clifton is nicely sheltered from Cape Town’s notorious south-easterly wind making it an especially attractive option when the “Cape Doctor” decides to blow. While each of Clifton’s beaches is a pleasure to visit, Fourth Beach is the most popular among local and international trend-setters, and with the icy Atlantic Ocean lapping the shoreline, swimming is not a high priority for the sleekly tanned, designer-clad sun-lovers enjoying this beautiful location.

Clifton offers modern clean ablution facilities, as well as kiosks selling snacks and other odds-and-ends for the beach, and while Clifton itself does not have much to offer in the line of restaurants, being conveniently located between Sea Point and Camps Bay, there are a host of restaurants, cafés, coffee shops and pubs just down the road in either direction.

Sunsets at Clifton are something special, providing the perfect setting to enjoy a sundowner or a sunset picnic. So, be sure to don your designer swimwear and sunglasses and soak up the sun on Clifton’s stunning beaches when you visit Cape Town.

Clifton Beach is made up of four distinct beaches—First, Second, Third, and Fourth Beach—each separated by large granite boulders and each attracting a different crowd. Fourth Beach, in particular, is a haven for celebrities, models, and global trendsetters. The entire Clifton strip has achieved Blue Flag status for its clean environment, safety, and excellent facilities. Despite the luxurious appeal, Clifton’s white sands and picturesque sunsets are accessible to all, making it one of Cape Town’s most beloved beach destinations.
