Prospector’s Hiking Trail – Natural Beauty and Historical Interest
In the 1800s, the small town of Pilgrim’s Rest in the Mpumalanga Province became a central destination for prospectors during the gold rush. They walked along the Robbers pass, over Blackhill and by Klipspringer Randjies. To follow in the footsteps of these gutsy adventurers, hiking enthusiasts can retrace history and face the difficulties that the prospectors had to overcome by packing their backpacks and setting off on the breathtaking Prospectors Hiking Trail.
The Prospectors Hiking Trail can be divided into a five day hiking excursion, or hikers can choose to explore only sections of the trail. Comfortable huts along the trail allow visitors to rest and rejuvenate along the way. The trail does consist of a few challenges along the way, but for most of the trail hikers will be too mesmerized by the beauty of the landscape to become aware of their tiring legs. Spectacular views of areas such as the Sabie Valley and Origstad Valley give hikers a panoramic overview of the region and leave hikers with a memorable experience. To explore the spectacular nature of Mpumalanga and to relive a small part of history, the Prospectors Trail will fulfill all hikers’ expectations.
