The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum has a permanent collection of art, but does host temporary exhibitions as well. Here visitors will find Chinese textiles, oriental art, local art, British art and a variety of other artistic wonders. The Ron Belling Art Gallery was created as a tribute to Ron Belling, and his magnificent aviation masterpieces can be viewed here. Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha, is home to one of South Africa’s finest aviation art collections—housed in the Ron Belling Art Gallery. Belling was a combat pilot and artist whose precision aviation paintings are recognized internationally. Also, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum began in 1956 and was renamed to honor Mandela’s legacy in supporting the arts.
