Baynesfield Landgoedmuseum

Dis allereers nodig om meer te weet van die lewe van Joseph Baynes. Hy is in 1842 gebore in Yorkshire en op agtjarige ouderdom vergesel hy sy vader na die Natal Kolonie. Hy ontwikkel tot ‘n uitstaande landboukundige en slaag daarin om die plaas wat tans die Baynes Landgoed is, aan te koop. Hy het onder andere ‘n kuur vir Ooskuskoors gesoek en het veral die gebruik van diptenks vir beeste in die melkbedryf gevestig. Hy het pionierswerk gedoen ten opsigte van die suiwelbedryf in Suid-Afrika; hy het ook deurbrake in die beroking van varkspek bewerkstellig; hy het deur die ontwikkeling van ‘n georganiseerde suiwelbedryf veral ten opsigte van melk en botter in Durban kontrakte bekom wat van so ‘n omvang was die die Maydon-kaai in die Durban-hawe ontwikkel moes word en wat tot die verdubbeling van die grootte van die hawe gelei het. Hy het ook op ander terreine homself onderskei en word voorsitter van die Indiër Immigrasieraad, Minister van Grondsake (1903-04), Vrederegter, verkry die Britse orde CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George), en hy verteenwoordig Ixopo in die Natalse Wetgewende Vergadering. Na sy dood op die ouderdom van 83 jaar is hy begrawe in ‘n grafkelder op die landgoed.

Joseph Baynes se woning en landgoed is gerestoureer en kan deur die publiek deur middel van ‘n afspreek besigtig word. Daar is antieke stoomenjins steeds in werkende toestand te sien en dit vorm die hoofkwartier van die Natal Antieke Trekker en Enjin Klub. Daar is die eerste botterfabriek in Natal wat terugdateer na 1899. In die perseel van die ou kaasfabriek is ‘n uitstalling van ‘n verskeidenheid ou naaldwerkmasjiene asook ‘n fotoversameling van die huis en tuine. Daar is ook ‘n interessante vesameling van items van Indiese oorsprong. In die woning is daar ‘n lewende uitstalling van ‘n grofsmid besig met sy werk asook die Antiek Houtwerkklub. Die Viktoriaanse woning is ten volle gerestoureer en binne-in is daar van die oorspronklike sitkamermeubels asook ander periode stukke op bruikleen van die KwazuluNatal Museumdiens.
