Besoek die Anton van Wouw-museum

Anton van Wouw is gebore in Driebergen, naby Utrecht in Nederland, op 20 November 1862. Op agt en twintg jarige ouderdom het hy na Pretoria verhuis. Dit was tien jaar voor sy eerste belangrike opdragwerk toe die nyweraar en finansier, Sammy Marks, aan Van Wouw die taak opgelê het om ‘n groot standbeeld van president Paul Kruger van die Transvaal te maak. Kruger het later sinoniem geword met die weerstand teen die Britte met die Anglo-Boereoorlog van 1899 tot 1902. Hierdie standbeeld oorheers steeds Kerkplein in Pretoria en herinner aan die stormagtige pioniersdae.

Die Van Wouw-huis is ontwerp deur Norman Eaton en is in 1938 voltooi. Die siersteen, grasdakhuis met sy ornamentele dam en lowergroen tuin weerspieël Van Wouw se liefde vir die natuur. Hy het daar gewoon van 1939 tot sy dood in 1945. Die Van Wouw-museum word deur die Universiteit van Pretoria bestuur.

Van Wouw het ‘n besondere liefde vir sy aangenome land gehad en het baie tyd in die buitelug deurgebring en het ook die inheemse bevolkings leer ken. Van sy kleinere beeldhouwerke wat minder formeel was, spreek van sy begrip vir hierdie mense in die wyse waarop hy gesigsuitdrukkings en gemoedstemmings uitgebeeld het. Van sy beste werke word in die museum uitgestal en sluit in die Laggende Basoetoe, die Denker, die Shangaan, die Skapu-speler, die Jagter wat Drink en die Slapende Swartman.

Van Wouw het ook ‘n groot respek vir die Boere-volk ontwikkel en het ‘n besondere vermoë gehad om hul vasberadenheid en hoop vir ‘n toekoms uit te beeld. Een van sy vernaamste beeldhouwerke is die beeldegroep by die Nasionale Vrouemonument in Bloemfontein. Ander monumente van hom is die borsbeeld van genl De Wet en die standbeeld van die die eerste Eerste Minster van die Unie van Suid-Afrika, Louis Botha, in Durban.

Besoekers aan die Van Wouw-museum in Pretoria sal spoedig besef dat Anton van Wouw nie slegs ‘n talentvolle beeldhouer en kunstenaar was nie, maar dat hy ‘n persoon met besondere persepsievermoë en empatie was.
