The floral emblem of Pietermaritzburg is the vibrant azalea, and every spring the city comes alive with color as these blossoms decorate streets, parks, and public gardens.

Pietermaritzburg – A City of Heritage, Charm, and Scenic Beauty

Nestled in the verdant Umzinduzi Valley and framed by rolling green hills, Pietermaritzburg stands as one of South Africa’s most historically rich and visually striking cities. Founded in 1838 by Voortrekker settlers, this city has evolved into the capital of KwaZulu-Natal while proudly preserving its colonial character, old-world charm, and stately Victorian architecture.
Pietermaritzburg is a city that bridges the past and present. Its streets are lined with heritage buildings and museums that echo the stories of early pioneers, monumental battles, and a layered cultural history. At the heart of the city is the Voortrekker Museum, where relics from the 1838 Battle of Blood River—including an original oxwagon—invite visitors to step back into a foundational chapter of the country’s past.
Nearby, the Voortrekker House Museum—the oldest double-storey Voortrekker home still standing—displays authentic mid-1800s furnishings, while the charming Macrorie House Museum offers a glimpse into Victorian domestic life through the preserved residence of Bishop Macrorie, dating back to 1869.
The city is also home to the Comrades Marathon House, where the history of South Africa’s most famous ultramarathon is celebrated through memorabilia and exhibits in a restored Victorian building.
Nature flourishes in Pietermaritzburg too. The Botanical Gardens, founded in 1872, provide tranquil walkways amid towering trees and colorful indigenous and exotic plants. Alexandra Park, adorned with a Victorian bandstand and pavilion, hosts the annual Art in the Park Festival—a showcase of creativity set against a lush garden backdrop.
With its blooming azaleas, historical landmarks, and welcoming ambiance, Pietermaritzburg is a city that captures the eye and the imagination.
