Fetching weather...
The name “Bela-Bela” means “boiling-boiling” in Tswana, a reference to the town’s naturally warm mineral springs that have been used for their therapeutic properties since the 1800s. The town was formerly known as Warmbad, or “warm bath” in Afrikaans.

Bela-Bela – Holiday at the Hot Springs

Bela-Bela is nestled in Limpopo Province, just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. It has long been a preferred getaway for locals seeking rest and reconnection in nature. The town’s reputation centers on its geo-thermal hot springs—natural pools of healing, mineral-rich water discovered by the Tswana people over two centuries ago. Today, the springs continue to attract visitors to the well-known resort built in 1873, still operational as a spa and wellness retreat.

Surrounded by fertile farmland and abundant game reserves, Bela-Bela offers a unique blend of rural charm and outdoor adventure. The local economy thrives on agriculture and eco-tourism, and many residents are closely involved in farming, conservation efforts, or hospitality. Life in Bela-Bela moves at a gentler pace, grounded in natural beauty and traditional values. The surrounding bushveld is rich with birdlife, wildlife, and native flora, making the area a peaceful yet exciting destination for nature enthusiasts.

Visitors often comment on the balance this town manages to strike—where the calming atmosphere of a spa town meets the thrill of the African wilderness. From therapeutic baths to up-close wildlife encounters, Bela-Bela offers something rare: a place to relax deeply and explore freely.
