Badplaas – Renowned for Its Healing Hot Springs

Badplass(also known as eManzana).Nestled in the open grassland expanse of Mpumalanga, the small town of Badplaas has earned a reputation far beyond its borders for one particular reason—its naturally occurring hot springs. These sulphur-rich waters rise from deep beneath the earth at the base of the Ndlumudlumu hills, drawing visitors eager to experience their therapeutic benefits.

The origins of Badplaas as a settlement date back to 1876, when a Swazi chief gifted the land and its hot springs to Jacob de Clercq. Although the reasons for this gesture remain unknown, de Clercq recognized the potential and established a trading post on the site. Just a few years later, the gold rush of the 1880s transformed the region, bringing with it waves of miners hoping to strike it rich. After long days of grueling labor, many of these workers sought solace in the warm, mineral-laden waters of Badplaas to relieve their physical ailments.

Today, the allure of the hot springs remains strong. Travelers from across South Africa and beyond visit Badplaas for rest, recovery, and recreation. Over time, the town has grown into a popular destination, supporting a thriving tourism industry that caters to those seeking wellness, nature, and outdoor adventure.

In addition to its famous springs, Badplaas offers a variety of activities. The surrounding area is perfect for trout fishing, hiking through scenic trails, playing golf, and enjoying wildlife in nearby reserves. Vygeboom Dam, located close by, invites visitors for boating and fishing trips, adding to the town’s outdoor charm.

Situated conveniently among other towns in Mpumalanga—Carolina to the west, Barberton to the east, Machadodorp to the north, and Lochiel to the south—Badplaas serves as a peaceful, refreshing base for exploring the region.
