Historic Significance

Franschhoek, which means “French Corner” in Dutch, was founded by French Huguenots in 1688. Many of the region’s vineyards—such as La Motte, Haute Cabrière, and Boschendal—still reflect their French heritage in name, architecture, and winemaking tradition.
