Gordon’s Bay is home to a giant hillside emblem shaped like an anchor — but it’s not a military symbol! The large white anchor on the mountainside is often mistaken for a navy insignia, but it actually stands for the General Botha training college, a historic maritime academy that trained naval cadets. The initials “GB” under the anchor originally referred to General Botha, not Gordon’s Bay!

Gordons Bay

Popular Holiday Destination

Together with Somerset West and Strand, Gordon’s Bay forms part of South Africa’s Helderberg Basin, so named after the Helderberg Mountains that create a scenic backdrop to this charming seaside town. The waterfront promenade, lined with coffee shops, cafés, and restaurants, is arguably the main attraction of Gordon’s Bay.

Bikini Beach is the hotspot for the younger crowd to gather, with beach volleyball, surfing, and kayaking being popular leisure choices, while the main beach, with its gentler waves and paddling pools, is more family-oriented.

Lying on the eastern edge of False Bay, Gordon’s Bay is included in the stretch of coastline renowned for whale-watching opportunities. Not only is Gordon’s Bay a superb holiday destination in its own right, it is also conveniently situated near some of the Western Cape’s top tourist destinations.

With its white-washed Cape Dutch architecture and oak-lined avenues, Stellenbosch and a host of wine-route options are a mere 35 minutes from Gordon’s Bay, while Cape Town to the west and Hermanus to the east are only 40 minutes away.

Accommodation in Gordon’s Bay is plentiful, with options to suit virtually any budget, making it an excellent base for exploring the wider Western Cape.

Historic Significance

Gordon’s Bay is home to a giant white anchor emblem etched into the hillside—often mistaken as a naval symbol. In fact, it stands for the historic General Botha maritime training academy, a significant part of South Africa’s naval heritage. The letters “GB” under the anchor originally referred to General Botha, not the town itself!
