Perched on the slopes of Signal Hill, the vibrant neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap is a living canvas of Cape Malay culture—where brightly painted houses, cobbled lanes, and the sound of the athaan (call to prayer) form part of everyday life. The Cape Malay people, descended from enslaved individuals brought to the Cape by Dutch colonists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and other parts of Southeast Asia, have preserved their identity through centuries of hardship and celebration. Today, they remain one of Cape Town’s most distinct and resilient communities.
